Job Description

A leading Construction Company is looking for a Commercial Manager, to be based in Johannesburg.

Minimum requirements:

• Bachelor’s degree in Quantity Surveying, Business/Commercial, Financial, Legal or related field

• Minimum 20 years related work experience within the engineering and construction industry with a minimum of 10 years at a senior level

• Good knowledge of relevant markets and the engineering and construction industry. Exposure to the water treatment environment / projects will be an advantage

• Managed contracts using the FIDIC and NEC suit of contracts

• Demonstrated experience in working in African countries / Australia will be an advantage

• Demonstrated exposure to Operating & Maintenance contracts will be an advantage

Main responsibilities:

• Lead the entities commercial, contract administration, procurement, cost control and risk functions

• Manage, with HR department support, recruitment, training & development and personnel management within the commercial department

• Develop budgets and budget forecasting for projects and the entity

• Set and maintain standards for each function through procedures, audits and structured training to improve staff competency and performance levels

• Ensure compliance with all Company policies and procedures

• Review tenders commercially and contractually to understand the risks so that new contract are negotiated on terms acceptable to the entity

• Develop joint ventures and structure contractual relationships with local and international partners to secure new business

• Ensure contract administration is carried out to the highest standard including being the conduit and managing support from external lawyers and consultants

• Identify and report on risks and opportunities and identify ways to mitigate / avoid risks and take advantage of opportunities

• Manage the preparation of well-constructed subcontract packages based on appropriate terms and conditions clearly addressing scope, interfaces with others, timeframes and payment terms

• Manage subcontractors in accordance with relevant subcontracts including the assessment of subcontract liabilities, timely certification of payment and assessment of variations and claims

• Develop a suite of standards purchase orders and subcontracts tailored to suit the entities business needs

• Provide procurement advice, prepare, negotiate and administer the tender process for obtaining all purchases, subcontracts and service agreements for works and services

• Ensure major sub-contracts and supply orders are subject to peer reviews before being executed

• Liaise closely with the Financial Manager to develop and improve systems and processes to best manage the financial status of projects

• Carry out other ad hoc tasks as required or as appropriate for the needs of the entity
