International firm of Consulting Engineers is looking for a Lead Geotechnical Engineer to lead the company's geotechnical engineering work in Southern Africa.
Managing a mixed team of junior and senior geotechnical engineers; allocating work, supervising technical and financial aspects of the department, acting as a senior mentor and assisting in developing new business in the region. Note, there will be a hand-over period with the outgoing Geotechnical Lead of 6 months to allow a smooth transition.
- At least an honours degree in Geotechnical/ Civil Engineering or Engineering Geology
- Min 10 years’ experience in Geotechnical engineering
- Experience in leading a team
- Professionally qualified in Geology or Engineering (PREng)
A Geotechnical designer / Geologist of at least 10 years experience. Ability to lead a mixed team of senior and junior engineers/ geologists to complete geotechnical designs and manage GI (Geotechnical Investigations) without any local technical or financial supervision. Competent at managing project work including the financial and contracts aspects as well as technical delivery and staffing. In this role as Geotechnical Lead the appropriate professional qualifications (PREng) will be necessary to select the correct design approach and have the authority to sign-off designs and reports when completed. The candidate should demonstrate previous experience in slope and ground stability analysis, GI, foundation design, geotechnical modeling techniques, ground risk assessments, groundwater and contamination issues, and local-regional geology. Application of sound geotechnical knowledge of soil mechanics, African geology, rock mechanics, geomorphology, mapping and interpretation. Ability to carry out geotechnical analysis using both hand calculations from first principles, empirical factors from Standards, and computer modeling/ analysis programs such as WALLAP, SlopeW, AGS data manipulators, FLAC or PLAXIS. A sound knowledge of National (SA) and International standards of both investigation and design.
Management and Administration
Competent at managing project work including the financial and contracts aspects as well as staffing levels, programming the team's work and conducting their annual reviews. Monitor own progress and that of the team against a programme and a budget, report appropriately on that progress, forecast and take responsibility for profitable outcomes. Development of the team skills and size, where necessary, and development of the new business in collaboration with the other technical and business leaders in the SA offices. There will be support available from the UK head office (160 geotechnical engineers) whenever necessary and a regular dialogue with senior staff in the UK on both technical matters and managerial strategic approach is essential.
Mentoring and Coaching
Able to supervise the geotechnical team in the absence of the department manager, represent the geotechnical discipline in meetings with clients and contractors and at internal management meetings where necessary. Essentially this role is the deputy manager of the geotechnical department and immediate mentor to the junior staff.
