International firm of Consulting Engineers is looking to employ a Senior Geotechnical Engineer in their Johannesburg office. This is a long-term career appointment with the opportunity for advancement within the company and with the opportunity to lead the division in the future.
Key position details:
Supervising mixed teams of junior and intermediate geotechnical engineers, supervising technical and financial aspects of projects, acting as a mentor to those juniors. Reporting to the regional Southern Africa Geotechnical Lead and deputising for that role whenever necessary.
- At least an honours degree in Geotechnical/ Civil Engineering or Engineering Geology.
- Min 8 years’ experience in Geotechnical engineering.
- Experience in leading geotechnical delivery on a project and supporting head of department.
- Professional qualifications preferred but not essential (Geology or Engineering - PREng).
- Experience in mentoring and supervising the work of junior engineers.
- Experience in controlling a project budget for the geotechnical packages
A geotechnical designer/ Geologist of at least 8 years experience. Ability to complete designs WITHOUT any supervision from the regional Geotechnical Lead. Ability to check all junior engineer’s work and direct them in appropriate approach. Competent at managing project work including the financial and contracts aspects as well as technical delivery and staffing. Most importantly coach and mentor junior geotechnical engineers in foundation and earthworks design. Demonstrate previous experience in slope and ground stability analysis, geotechnical investigations, foundation design, geotechnical modelling techniques, ground risk assessments, groundwater and contamination issues, and local-regional geology. Application of sound geotechnical knowledge of soil mechanics, geological issues, rock mechanics, geomorphology, mapping and interpretation, and the use of local and international standards (SANRAL etc.). Ability to carry out geotechnical analysis using both hand calculations from first principles, empirical factors from Standards, and computer modelling/ analysis programs such as WALLAP, SlopeW, AGS data manipulators, FLAC or PLAXIS.
Management and Administration
Within a project: Competent at managing the project work, including the financial and contracts aspects as well as technical delivery and staffing. Most importantly coach and mentor junior geotechnical engineers in foundation and earthworks design. Monitor own progress and that of junior staff against a programme and a budget, report appropriately on that progress and forecast any potential cost/programme over-runs in the package they have been given. Able to support the regional Geotechnical Lead (Manager) in development of the team and the future business, deputising for the Lead role whenever the Lead is absent - view to taking the Lead role in years to come.
Mentoring and Coaching
Able to supervise the geotechnical team in the absence of the department manager, represent the geotechnical discipline in meetings with clients and contractors and at internal management meetings where necessary. Essentially this role is the deputy manager of the geotechnical department and immediate mentor to the junior staff.
Able to manage site works, in particular ground investigations as an on-site supervisor / observer. Where applicable also oversee the foundation construction and earthworks as a site observer.
Experience in report writing.
Ability to work under pressure.
Meet targets / deadlines.
Manage conflict within design teams and outwardly with contractors and clients in a professional manner.
